In the COAL INDIA Ranchi marathon, half of the young runners were unable to finish their runs. The situation was so dire that 15 runners required medical assistance within the first 5 kilometers. Additionally, 78 runners had to take brief breaks after reaching the 21-kilometer mark, and eventually, half of the marathon participants had to abandon the race and seek help from ambulances.
The root issue lies in overexertion at the beginning of the run. Many young runners, in their eagerness, join the elite front line without considering their own capabilities. This rapid drain of energy leads them to hit a wall, rendering them unable to take another step.
Another contributing factor is the lack of proper planning. Many participants enter the race without prior training, often starting on an empty stomach. Marathons are rigorous tests that challenge both mental and physical strength. They demand immense energy, burning over 3200 calories depending on factors like temperature, wind, humidity, and body weight. Without proper and regular energy boosts and hydration, marathons can become life-threatening endeavors.
Listening to your body is crucial. Understanding your capabilities and training yourself to improve performance are essential aspects of marathon preparation.
